Established in 1925, The Royal Observer Corps (ROC) was given the task of visually reporting details of hostile aircraft in the days before the radar system was developed. Despite the latter technology, the ROC proved invaluable throughout the Battle of Britain, particularly when German attacks disrupted parts of the radar system.

However, the ROC was as important throughout the Cold War as it had been during the Second World War, and the advent of inter-continental ballistic missiles brought about a revised role in the reporting of the location and magnitude of nuclear strikes. The Society arranged two visits to the site of Aspidistra on the Ashdown Forest at Kingstanding near Crowborough in April 2010.

Aspidistra was the name given to what was then the most powerful radio transmitter in the world installed here in 1942 as part of a black propaganda campaign run by the Politcal Warfare Executive, directed by former journalist Sefton Delmer. More...
